The youth of today
I am often offended and ashamed to see people around my age being brandished as “anti-social” and “delinquents”, often being the cause of most of the country’s crime and just basically a big nuisance.
There is only a small minority that fit this profile. I mean, surely anyone reading this must know that if there is trouble around their area, they can almost pinpoint it on individuals. It’s not every teenager/young adult in the town or city!
I’m also upset that there isn’t more coverage on those that are good. Sometimes there is a story about an exceptionally good young person doing something for charity or their community, but those are hard to come by. The stories, I mean. The actual deeds are more common than anyone dares to consider, and it’s such a pity that our society has become like this.
Today I was shocked and appalled at one of my own relatives. She was offered a seat on a bus by a young man. She didn’t say around what age, but from her story I assume late teens or early twenties. She almost refused the seat, finding it suspicious that he offered. Now what in the entire world is suspicious about that? He had manners and was courteous enough to let an elderly woman take his seat on a busy bus. Is that not something we should be proud of and embrace, and not cower from?
I just hope that those that say “things get worse before they get better” are right, and this is as bad as it will get.

Neither of us could be bothered to do a proper post, so this is just some random fun for ourselves. Most of the questions are from various survays on Facebook!

Nouveller - Questions with designer folk
He has another site, apart from his personal one (linked on his name above) called Nouveller. Ben says that this site is his 'web outlet, a resource, an inspiration ... and a testing ground for my mad experiments.'
Recently, Ben created five quick fire questions for creative people to answer, which I wasn't aware of until he requested one last person - which was me (woot)!
Not to show off or anything, but here's the link to his post "Five quick fire questions with designer folk."
The other artists are amazing - I honestly feel a little lame being among them! Ben too is a brilliant designer and photographer, which you will see from browsing around his sites.
Thanks again! - Yasmin

IQ Font
There's a new font called "IQ Font" which has been created by a car!

As you can see Campenhoudt did the "writing". The 4 dots on the roof of the car was tracked in real time using a camera and a custom software designed by fellow artist Zachary Lieberman of openFrameworks.
You can download it free and see a video of it's creation here.
I downloaded it and it's awesome :D

Dark energy and a wonky world
I have to confess I did not read the full article, because although I find it interesting, most of it was going over my head and I got bored of not understanding!

Basically, scientists said that they understood the universe to be pretty much flat and they knew the history all the way to just after the big bang, and that they could even predict the future. However, new discoveries have caused the picture of the universe to be "blown wide open again."
It's all down to "dark energy." I have no idea what that is, but the article explains that the shape (geometry) of the universe and dark energy are intertwined.
However, they say without a more precise measurement on the geometry "it is impossible to determine the nature and evolution of dark energy."
For more imformation, please click here - it will be a lot more useful than I am. Plus, if you know this stuff, I'm sure it's a very good read! Enjoy!

LOLcats
Today Jade decided to do up her profile. It asked her gender, and then her location.
Yasmin said (while looking at her own laptop) "your bedroom" which made Jade burst out laughing! She became hysterical and asked if Yasmin had watched her type it, which she hadn't, because Jade had just put "My bedroom" as her answer!!
After spending so much time with someone, you start living inside their head!! Seeing as we have nothing else in there =)Anyway, LOOK WHAT YASMIN MADE :D

Paddington Bear the movie
Just a quick post to say I am so happy to hear that there is going to be a Paddington bear movie! It was announced in September but I have only just heard about it!
I grew up loving the marmalade eating bear (I even named my cat after him) and after 50 years it’s about time he graced the big screen! One of the producers is the man behind the harry potter movie David Heyman, I hope he makes Paddington as big as Harry Potter is! It should be coming to cinema in 2010 and I for one can’t wait!

To boldly go to infinity and beyond
The new Star Trek movie surprised me. I was expecting a boring re-telling of all the same stories but to my surprise it turned out to be one of the best movies to come out this year.
Star Trek (2009) is the story of how James T Kirk, the 20 something trouble-making, womanizer turns into the Captain of the Enterprise. And what happens in between can blow your socks off. There are two black holes, numerous fist/gun fights, lots of running around, time travel and some brilliant one linners. If you want to read the full summary then check it out here
I was not really a fan of the original TV series so you can’t say I am writing this as a hard core Trekkie, but I am writing this as a hard core movie fan and star trek did not disappoint me. The whole film has a great mix of humour, action and amazing visual effect but the thing that out-shines all of these is the level of acting in the movie. Most of the actors are relatively unknown but they all bring their own spin on a very old and out-dated character.
Chris Pine (that guy from Princess Diaries 2 and just my luck) and Zachary Quinto (Syler from heroes) play Kirk and Spock and I don’t think they could have found better actors. Chris manages to make you laugh out loud and then feel sorry for him in a split second, and somehow even though Spock shows no emotion Zach can make you feel the same way Spock does. These two actors are one of the main reasons why Star trek is such a massive hit.
Star Trek should not be seen as a geeky film that only people who have seen all the films and read all the comics will understand, but because there is time travel involved everything that has happened in those is pretty irrelevant!
I know it is a little late to go and watch it in the cinema but the DVD comes out on November 17th so why not borrow it from blockbusters and see what you are missing out on. Even if you don’t like enjoy it as much as I do it is worth watching for the great CGI and Simon Pegg with a pretty bad Scottish accent!
-Jade xoxo
P.S even if you have no interest in watching the film it is worth watching the Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine interviews on youtube.com because they are very funny together.

The Union
I think I ought to mention it here and get a few more people (although that's being a little optimistic - who actually reads this blog?) to atleast consider watching it too.

Even if you have no interest in taking drugs, now or ever, it still raises a lot of questions which everybody should think about.
The documentary tackles the myths and so called "dangerous" side-effects of the drug, and shows us the truth. For example, it explains to us the truth behind the "fact" that marijuana kills brain cells, and how that study was conducted, and also how many people actually (DON'T) die from marijuana intake.
There's also demonstrations of what the drug can do medically, and how a plant of the same kind, although also illegal to grow, can create clothing, food, and even run cars!
It also has a lot of references to alcohol and compares the real dangers of the legal drug and the illegal drug.
So watch and you tell me - which should be illegal?

British Big Brother 10
(Noirin and Siavash) If you don’t watch it then let me give you the short version of events that have happened over the past 7 weeks. There is this beautiful girl called Noirin who is a very sweet, nice, single girl. First off one of the housemates, Sree, Became completely obsessed with her. Noirin thought because he had no experience with woman he was just being friendly and didn’t see that he was ‘in love with her’. After she told him she didn’t see him ‘that way’ he turned on her. He was then evicted from the house and Noirin was free. For about 1 day. She had befriended Marcus, who looks a lot like wolverine (and not in a good way!), before the whole thing with Sree and they became close friends after he left. But Marcus wanted to be more, even though the rest of the house told him he was being delusional! After Noirin found out Marcus wanted to be more then friends she told him she wanted to be his friend. And only his friend. But Marcus just can’t take no for an answer! So when Noirin starts having feelings for other housemates somehow she turns out to be the bad person in the public eyes!
(Marcus and Noirin)
Whenever she wants to talk to the others she feels bad for not spending more time with him. Or Marcus will tell her that the others don’t want to be her friend they are just playing a game, which they clearly are not! But because they have been friends the whole time Marcus seems to have a hold on Noirin which is ruining her time in the house.
Are you still following?
So, two nights ago Noirin kissed Siavash, because they both had feelings for each other so surely there should be nothing wrong with that? Guess again! Noirin told Marcus that she likes Siavash and they kissed but they are not going to act on their feelings until after the show is finished. After Noirin basically apologised to Marcus (still don’t understand why!) he then told her he won’t be talking to her the next day!
It’s not Noirin's fault she doesn’t like Marcus. And it is also not Noirin’s fault she doesn’t know who she fancies and who is her friend but who doesn’t go through that at some point? But all of this causes people to see Noirin as not a nice person because all these guys are falling for her! She doesn’t make them fall for her she is just nice to them! Personally I think all the viewers who don’t like her are just jealous of her, and I feel sorry for her because she is going to get evicted and booed a lot and told that she led all these men when all she has done is try and be everyone’s friend.
So stop being mean to her!

Brand Keyboard
Instead of using the letter of the alphabet on the keys, it has brand logos, and obviously which key it should be corresponds with the first letter of the brand's logo - ie T for Twitter!

The designer is Ignacio Pilotto.
It's said that "The repetition of the logos used by the advertising psychology, causes us to systematically recognize the brands, getting us to recognize the logos rather than our own alphabet."
What do you think?
I find it a little strange - a bit like those symbol/wingding fonts! Imagine writing your name (or anything!) with logos instead of the usual alphabet?
Or just trying to type! I suppose it's not so bad if you can touch type - you would know where the keys are - but wouldn't it be tricky for those that need to look at the keyboard?

Police v Ice Cream Vans
Now onto an actual post.
Ice Cream vans seem be the next victim of the campaign for a healthier society. Police in Harrow are being encouraged to move on or arrest any parked vans if they don't have a license to trade.
However, they can't get a license to trade! The council no longer issue street vending licenses to ice cream sellers, so basically - they are being run off the street.
The council claim they have to do this because they fear it causes nuisance or makes children fat.
There is also being a crackdown on 'hotdog vans, burger vans, any type of vans'. Those are fair enough, as the fast food industry is getting out of hand. But ice cream is a one off treat for most people during the summer, and it's more the joy of getting it from the van which children enjoy - would you agree?

£10,000 to look like her daughter
She believes that her daughter got her looks from her anyway, but she had just not looked after herself properly and therefore decided she wanted her beauty back.

Can you guess who is who? Janet, the mother, is on the left. This came as a surprise to me, as she actually looks younger than her 23 year old daughter.
Apparently, they get a lot of attention in bars from men who cannot distinguish them apart.

What do you think?
Is it weird that someone in her 50s is trying to pass off as someone in their 20s - and no less her daughter - or do you think it's good that she wants to look after her figure, and admires her daughters so much?

Internet Privacy - British Govt must act
After failing to apply EU data policy rules that restrict internet advertising tracking, Britain has been given a warning from the EU who have started legal action against them.
The warning asks Britain to 'explain or change the way it interprets EU rules because it currently allows interception when it is unintentional or when a tracker has "reasonable grounds" to believe that consent was given.'
The European Commission says that information on any user can not be tracked or analysed unless the user gives explicit consent.
Britain has 2 months to respond to this warning before the EU may issue more warnings or eventually take the British government to court.

Rainbow Cake!

I am not the biggest fan of food colouring, after once trying a spiderman cake with so much red dye in, I threw up after only a couple of bites.
However, even if only to look at, this cake is amazing.
For instructions on how to make it (ingrediants and tips), go to http://www.omnomicon.com/rainbowcake ... Although it is basically a cake, with added food colouring before baking.

Tweenbots

The creator of these cute little robots is Kacie Kinzer, a student at New York University, who explained on the tweenbots website:
It's first mission was to get from the north-east corner of washington square park to the south-west corner. Apparently this took 42 minutes, with 29 people helping. Below is a map of it's journey, and just some random and oh-so-sweeeet pictures of the little robot. There is also a video on the website.

300ft fall off a cliff
Tourists near Folkestone, Kent witnessed a man falling 300ft to his death around 3pm yesterday. The coast-guard said that the man was posing for a photograph when the grass gave way.
This follows another incident close by at Capel-le-Ferne, where a man was walking with his friends when he fell from the cliffs at around 1:30pm, the same day.
In response to these two deaths, a spokeswoman said, "Please do not stray away from cliff paths and do not go near the edges of cliffs.
Often, despite appearances, they can be unstable and crumbly, as well as being slippery when wet.
Wherever you are in the country, please enjoy the coastline this bank holiday, but stay away from cliff edges."
No disrespect to either unfortunate men, but would you agree that it doesn't take an awful lot of common sense to know not to go too close to the edge of a cliff?

Real Life Superheroes
You must go check out the World Superhero Registry.
I don't mean to offend these people - their hearts are in the right places.. I just can't help giggling at some of the costumes and names, and how some of them are really convinced they are superheroes.
My favourite one is "Angle Grinder Man "
.jpg)
"Angle-grinder Man patrols by night looking for unhappy drivers who have been clamped and then sets their cars free. An odd-job man by day, he operates in Kent during the week and in London on weekends. ... "My obsession with wheel-clamping is actually a rebellion against a much deeper malaise," he said. "Namely, the arrogant contempt that politicians hold for the people who put them into power, and whom they claim to represent."
That is very sweet of him - even if it is a little bit crazy.
Check out the rest on the registry, but try not to laugh too hard as these people are doing their best to help the world in their own special way!
Recycle your crayons!
The Green Girls have come up with a fun way to grab the attention of kids for a while, and to recycle those crayons.
Instructions:
1. Gather all your broken crayons and take the wrappers off
2. Cut them into small pieces.
3. Preheat the oven to 150 degrees.
4. Fill the muffin tin or a candy mold with an inch-thick layer of crayon pieces.
5. Bake 15-20 minutes, or until the wax is melted.
6. Allow the tin to cool; then pop out the crayons, and they're ready for use.

Go to their post for more tips on making these cool wax things, or browse through their blog for more cool ideas like this!

Jigsaw puzzle... of body parts!
So far police have found both legs, an arm, the head and today the torso of what they believe to be the same unidentified victim.
The torso was found in a remote country lane near Standon, Hertfordshire. The other body parts were also found in Hertfordshire, apart from the head which was found in Asfordby, Leicestershire. However, they strongly believe that they are (well... were) all attached to the same man.
I find this very upsetting and horrific! - who could do such a thing?
If you want more info, go to The Times because I don't really feel like saying much more than GROSS!
Deepest love - secrets unlocked
By unconditional love, they are refering to an emotion "experienced as a desire to care for another person without any thought of reward."

They conducted their research on low-paid assistants looking after people with learning difficulties.
Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans they were able to identify seven areas of the brain that became active while evoking feelings of unconditional love. Three of these areas are similar to those associated with romantic love, but as the others were different, it suggests that unconditional love is a separate kind of love.
How many different kinds of love do you think there are, or do you think they are all the same but differ slightly depending on circumstances?

Bouncers as subs?
However, it seems that schools now feel they must employ "classroom supervisors" with a military or law enforcement background, to deal with "crowd control."

One school in North London were permanently employing two subs through a professional doormen agency, because they were "stern and loud" says a spokesman for the school.
Just after a few weeks, one of the bouncers have been dismissed for breaching disciplinary codes.
An agency for supply teachers in the West Midlands are now advertising for 'hard core' classroom supervisors who can 'control the kids in schools'.
It's all a little crazy, don't you think?
Yes, kids can get a bit out of hand - but is it necessary to employ people who are trained to work with drunken loonatics with no self control?
